What It Takes to Build a Smart City in India

The Indian government has some lofty plans for the Internet of Things – a 100 smart cities by the year 2020. The government’s Smart City plan is part of a larger agenda – state of the art industrial corridors between India’s biggest metropolitan cities are already in the works. Three such projects which are imminent include the Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC), the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor and the Bangalore-Mumbai Economic Corridor. The DMIC, spread across six states, will line up seven new smart cities in its first phase of development itself.

Not surprisingly, these corridors are developed by the Indian Government in collaboration with foreign governments – Japan intends to invest $4.5 billion in the first phase of the DMIC project. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) is helping design 3 smart cities – Ponneri in Tamil Nadu, Krishnapatnam in Andhra Pradesh and Tumkur in Karnataka as part of the Chennai-Bangalore Industrial Corridor. India is also getting help from the UK for the development of the Bangalore Mumbai Economic Corridor.

We’re also seeking Singapore’s experties in urban planning to bring the 100 Smart Cities dream into reality. All this notwithstanding, there are some home-grown technology companies that could strike gold in this landscape. There is a real opportunity for Indian start-ups to  crack the Indian IoT space and gain market share.

  1. A hundred smart cities! It’s good, but what about other industrial sectors? Graduates in other engineering fields are turning into expats in no time. Something has to be done in core mechanical sectors too. Its not just IT geeks we have here to employ. Just saying…
